How perfection is achieved.

Every new development starts with questions – many questions. And that was certainly the case for Rittal in summer 2012. What is needed for control system and switchgear engineering? Where can a new enclosure be used? And will it be an evolution or a revolution?

Only one thing was clear from the outset:
The new Rittal enclosure system must be 100% Industry 4.0-capable.

After all, only a combination of actual enclosure and its digital twin will satisfy all digitisation needs, from online configuration and engineering to assembly, automation and maintenance.

Every new development starts with questions. To respond to these, Rittal worked with the Munich-based institute PMO in 2012 to launch a wide-ranging field study. A team of usability experts, psychologists and anthropologists visited various major control system and switchgear engineering companies on a total of three continents. The experts watched over the shoulders of each individual user group – and saw the enclosure from completely fresh perspectives. They even identified problems that the customers themselves were not aware of and came back in 2014 with a list of 150 requirements.

The usability study provided the strategic direction – an enclosure that immediately reduces throughput times in engineering and assembly, minimises complexity and slots neatly into the megatrend of digitisation. The developers withdrew into their start-up-like offices for a full three months. They poured out every last detail of every idea that had collected in their heads over 20 years of enclosure engineering. At the start of 2015, a judging panel decided on the best from a total of 200 profile designs. The winner profile implemented all the key points from the study.

The right turn.

The frame section of the large enclosure has a big say in dictating installation space, efficiency, expansion options and stability. At the end of 2015, the whole project was threatened with an early end. The test run for profiling the frame section threatened to disappoint. Every large enclosure conception stands and falls with the section, it is the most technologically demanding part. Yet the developers examined every possible option for months, worked assiduously on the prototype and finally came up with the solution: to rotate the section, along with the welding seam, through exactly 180°. The following test runs went very well and the first sample enclosures could go on their way.

In 2017, the time had finally come: The five-year development period came to a successful conclusion with the product presentation. Together with its digital twin, the enclosure will meet all the future digital requirements of online configuration, engineering, assembly, automation and maintenance. The enclosure is geared to the demands of the customers: greater simplicity, higher speed and more benefits. Its key characteristics are the highest possible quality and consistency of data, reduced complexity, savings in time and safe and secure assembly. “System perfection” will be hard to surpass, even for a market leader.

An enclosure whose name says it all

V

The VX25 is above all versatile. The V thus stands for the product’s unlimited opportunities. The VX25 offers key customer benefits along the entire value chain. It is suitable for applications in virtually all industries and is available worldwide.

X

Like the mathematical variable, the X also reflects customers’ different requirements – which can be met by the VX25 – and thus makes a clear statement regarding a customer-focused approach with unlimited opportunities.

25

The name of our new flagship enclosure makes clear reference to the 25 mm pitch pattern as an indication of perfect symmetry.
