Fast, problem-free, automated manufacturing is a crucial requirement for the factory of today. The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) makes it possible. By interlinking their machines and devices, companies can optimise their production availability, improve their delivery capabilities and perfect their products.
Rittal is driving the development of IIoT with its own solutions and smart services: From smart sensors, enclosure monitoring and smart cooling solutions, through to smart service concepts and computing performance in the cloud. In this way, companies enhance the fail-safeness of their production locations, optimise energy consumption, and help drive the digitalization process.

How to capture, digitalize and use data profitably are the core concepts behind Industry 4.0. As the interface between automation and information technology, these requirements are met by the IoT interface from Rittal. This intelligent gateway supports most common industrial protocols (Modbus/TCP, SNMP) as well as the platform-independent OPC UA protocol, guaranteeing continuous vertical communication from the field level to the control level.
The transfer of device data is not limited to the classic automation pyramid. Cloud Connectivity means that device data can also be captured at a local level and visualised and analysed regardless of location.
The IoT interface has an integral Web server that can be accessed from any browser. This allows data to be analysed directly without the need for specialist IT knowledge. In addition, configuration and commissioning are swiftly executed via the Web server with no programming whatsoever.
Digitalization will transform your production. Industry 4.0 is paving the way for digital twins, predictive maintenance, and smart factories. Sensors in machines and their components are interlinked, with the ability to process data and communicate with one another in real time. Production processes can be optimsed by analysing all data as quickly as possible. An edge data centre allows you to manage this information and make it available in real time to improve product quality, traceability, and availability.
The Rittal Edge Data Center is a platform for rapid assembly of solutions that can be flexibly used in any IT environment. The assemblies are available in various performance classes and can be combined to create a ready-to-use solution in no time at all. This greatly speeds up the process of implementing a data centre and ensures optimum operating efficiency.
"Rittal Data Center Containers are an essential element of our integrated security concept and meet our demands for the very highest security standards. The edge data centres created as part of our partnership with Rittal are assembled directly at our production sites, providing efficient, reliable support for IoT scenarios as well."

Enclosures protect the devices inside, and also protect humans from electric shocks. To ensure that both these functions are permanently guaranteed, enclosure doors should never be left open while in control mode.
With the IIoT "door monitoring" bundle, the door status (open / closed) is supplied via Ethernet and can be monitored from anywhere in the world.
The bundle may be extended by up to 32 further sensors for monitoring a wide range of ambient variables. A complete overview of the available sensors can be found here.
Access to control cabinets with safety-critical and sensitive electronics must be limited to authorised persons. Unauthorised access can quickly result in serious damage.
With the IIoT "access monitoring" bundle, the door status (open/closed) is supplied via Ethernet and can be monitored from anywhere in the world.
As an alternative to the transponder reader, a combination lock may be used for secure, personalised access.

Access to control cabinets with safety-critical and sensitive electronics must be limited to authorised persons. Unauthorised access can soon lead to extensive damage.
With the IIoT "access monitoring" bundle, access to the enclosures is administered centrally via the network, with no need for keys or lock systems.
As an alternative to the transponder reader, a combination lock may be used for secure and personalised access.
The bundle may be extended by up to 32 further sensors for monitoring a wide range of ambient variables. A complete overview of the available sensors can be found here.
Damaged and defective conductors increase the risk of fire in a switchgear system. The IIoT "Fire Detection" bundle ensures that fires are reliably detected as they start to develop. In addition, the smart network-powered smoke detector automatically transmits the signal to higher-level alarm centres so that fire-fighting measures can be initiated promptly in case of fire.
In conjunction with the Rittal I/O Unit fires can be effectively prevented from spreading. How is this achieved? In case of fire, the I/O unit relay switches the power contactor in the enclosure to interrupt the power supply to the defective components.
The bundle may be extended by up to 32 further sensors for monitoring a wide range of ambient variables. A complete overview of the available sensors can be found here.
Energy consumption must be transparently and continuously recorded so that action can be taken to improve energy efficiency in accordance with the ISO 50001 standard. Rittal’s Smart Monitoring System for NH fuse-switch-disconnectors offers a simple and reliable solution for low-voltage distributors which continuously records and monitors measurement data such as current, voltage, power and active energy.

Enclosures sited outdoors are often exposed to temperature fluctuations and high levels of humidity. This leads to the formation of condensation which can cause serious damage to switchgear, such as flashovers or short circuits.
With the IIoT "Humidity Monitoring" bundle, the relative humidity inside the enclosure is relayed via Ethernet and can be monitored from anywhere in the world.
Rittal enclosure heaters regulate relative humidity and prevent temperatures from dropping below the dew point to stop condensation forming inside the enclosure. This prevents consequential damage associated with corrosion or electrical short circuits.
